New Andy Sheppard concert, Russ's celebration gig, Jaco film and more in Leeds - Entrepreneur Generations



Lots of jazz variety to enjoy in Leeds this November - the music of Benny Carter and Gerry Mulligan, superb Polish jazz guitarist Maciek Pysz , local sax hero Russell van den Berg , not to mention Ian Chalk's "Firebird" and a film documentary about Jaco Pastorious. But to start this coming Sunday Cuban flautist Jose Zalba-Smith with the Latin rhythms of the "Manana Collective".....

Manana Collective @Seven Arts 1.30pm, Sun 8 November £7/5 
Jose Zalba-Smith flute, James Clark piano, Pete Komor bass, Rod Oughton drums 
Led by Leeds pianist James Clark on piano, the Mañana Collective is a powerhouse of latin rhythm. Multi-continental musical mayhem!

Russell Van Den Berg Celebration Quartet@Seven Arts 7.45pm, Thursday 12 November £14/12 
Russell Van Den Berg, Ivo Neame piano, Steve Watts bass and Tim Giles drums. An all-star quartet has been put together to mark Leeds based saxophonist Russell Van den Berg reaching the grand old age of 40! Initially a tenor saxophonist now turned alto player, Russ will be playing material from those he's worked with including a tribute to the late Kenny Wheeler. The band features Ivo Neame - oneof the UK's  most exciting pianists with bands like Phronesis, Marius Neset and his own octet. In support is a quartet led by Leeds bassist Sam Dutton-Taylor

Al Wood Quintet " Benny Carter meets Gerry Mulligan" @Seven Arts 1.30pm, Sun 15 November £7/5
Al Wood saxes, Trevor Vincent trumpet, Martin Longhawn piano, Garry Jackson double bass, Caroline Boaden drums. Swing it brother, swing! Leeds sax maestro and big band leader Al Wood leads a quintet reprising the music of two of the  classic jazz saxophonists

Maciek Pysz trio@Seven Arts 1.30pm, Sun 22 November £7/5
Maciek Pysz guitar, Yuri Goloubev double bass , Asaf Sirkis drums 
An international jazz super group on a Sunday afternoon! Maciek Pysz is a Polish composer and guitarist making a big name for himself. He is joined by the brilliant double bassist Yuri Goloubev making his first appearance at Seven Jazz, plus stylish drummer Asaf Sirkis.

"Firebird Quartet" @Seven Arts 1.30pm, Sun 29 November £7/5
Ian Chalk on trumpet, Martin Longhawn on piano, John Marley on bass and Tim Carter on drums. Make no mistake this band are good! Contemporary jazz, funky grooves and their own take on standards by Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Wayne Shorter

Leeds International Film Festival – Jaco Wednesday 18th November
Plus, for all you film buffs, come and see Stephen Kijak and Paul Marchands’ vibrant documentary "Jaco" paying testament to jazz legend Jaco Pastorious, with insights from an array of artists including Flea, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. http://ift.tt/1P5mif6.
