I watched The Big Short on I-Tunes this weekend, so I could have all of the 8 Best Picture nominees watched by tonight's telecast. With that in mind, here's my Top-15 of 2015:
1. Creed: this movie had everything, directed and acted with such energy and life. Michael B. Jordan should be nominated for Best Actor for this one; Sly will win (and I'll be rooting for him, too, since at least this great film will be recognized).
2. Inside Out: Perhaps the most poignant and inventive movie of the year is a cartoon. An amazing one.
3. Spotlight: It's a restrained procedural in some ways, which makes the emotional payoff by the end even more moving. I'm rooting for this one tonight for Best Picture.
4. Room: So much more than its premise, which is intriguing and edge-of-your-seat as it is, this flips the switch halfway through and becomes a psychological study in re-entry to society.
5. Carol: An affecting and beautiful portrait of a burgeoning romance, directed with control and command. I'm rooting for Rooney Mara for Best Supporting Actress; she is the heart of the film.
6: Star Wars: Yes, it tells a similar story to the first Star Wars. But how challenging was it to make such a good movie after we saw the mediocrity of the previous three.
7. Ex Machina: A modern day Frankenstein, smart and well-acted, creepy and stylish.
8. Brooklyn: an old-fashioned romance that's really about what it means to be an adult, the making of choices. Wonderfully acted.
9. What Happened, Miss Simone?: Brilliant singer #1 given a superb documentary; we hear her great music and feel her pain.
10. Amy: A brilliant singer #2 given the documentary treatment. Try not to be moved when you realize her daddy really *did* say that she didn't need rehab. (No talking heads in this one, pretty cool.)
11. The Martian: Tremendous adaptation of a novel that I thought got a little too caught in the details sometimes, exciting and funny throughout.
12. Tangerine: Masterfully shot on an I-Phone 5, this is a modern day odyssey -- episodic, moving, and funny -- that pays off in big ways by its poignant ending.
13. The Revenant: I didn't like all of it, but there are such tremendous scenes -- the nearly uncut, spellbinding opening scene; the horrifying bear scene -- that it made up for what its length and slowness.
14. Dope: Inventive and funny and, at times, quite moving and political.
15. It Follows: Creepy and spooky, but also artfully filmed, with some of the best scenes of the year (the opening scene, the scene at the beach...).
Honorable Mentions:
Bridge of Spies: Interesting and stately period drama, wouldn't have been nominated if not for Speilburg;
The Big Short: Too many distracting actors (Steve Carrell especially), but an interesting and entertaining story throughout.
Mad Max: Fury Road: Lots of action and beautiful shots, but too much like a 2-hour car chase, and too silly with its giant guitars and nipple rings.
I didn't see yet but really WANT to see:
Straight Outta Compton
Sicario
45 Years
Anomalisa
