Introducing... The Charm City Knights - Entrepreneur Generations

I have not written very much in the new year, but I'm working on it. One of the endeavors that has kept me happily busy is The Charm City Knights, a new rugby team formed in Baltimore at the start of 2017.

The Charm City Knights sprung from another rugby team in Baltimore, and the Knights' focus will be on service, mentorship, and providing access to rugby for Baltimore's youth. This season, however, is focused on fielding a competitive rugby team, which already has 17 officially CIPP'd members and is an official team on USA Rugby.

That's me on the left, running with a parachute!
I'm on the board, and our coach, Quentin Purvis, has been leading intense twice-weekly conditioning practices in an abandoned storefront on Harford Road, and weekly outdoor practices and instruction at Carroll Park. We have also been establishing an online presence; for example, since its genesis, the Knights' Facebook page (http://ift.tt/2kBuzMr) has amassed 620 likes in less a month's time. Meanwhile, our instagram (@charmcityknights) is growing as well. Official non-profit status is coming soon.

Our first game is scheduled for April 8th, against the Washington Renegades, and we are continuing to build our schedule for the summer. For example, we just were invited to the Colonial Cup 2017 in Philadelphia.

Personally, learning a new sport has been invigorating. Practices includes tasks such as sprinting with a weighted medicine ball or hand weights across 50 yards, back and forth, or wall sits that last for minutes at a time. In my 39 years on this planet, I've never ran with a parachute on my back, but i now do it weekly. These practices are tough, but feel good. We have been learning the rules of the sport via lots of hand-on drills and activities, and now words like "scrum" and "ruck" roll off my tongue with moderate ease.

I'm writing this entry as a bit of an advertisement: we are looking for more players. A roster of 17 official players is great for only 6 weeks of recruiting, but we'd like double that. You can come and check out a practice, and, even if you don't want to play rugby, our conditioning practices are open to anyone who wants some general fitness.

Please shoot us a message on the Facebook page if you have any questions.

Upcoming schedule is as follows:
Wednesday, Feb. 8 -- Core Conditioning at 6626 Harford Rd., open to all, cost $5-10 depending on number of people

Saturday, Feb. 10 -- Knights 101, 3pm at Carroll Park (park by basketball courts)
