A star studded month for Jazz Leeds with international musicians from USA, South Africa and Holland, two UK octets - one with jazz and poetry led by Alan Barnes with poetess Josie Moon, and one celebrating the life of Stan Tracey led by his son Clark. Then to round the month off the amazing world music of Don Kipper!

Craig Handy sax; Jonathan Gee piano, Nicola Sabato bass, Rod Youngs: drums. Leading US saxophonist Craig Handy comes to Leeds with a top class European trio. Since his time with Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Handy has contributed his lyrical and intensely passionate improvisations to ensembles led by Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Ray Drummond, Elvin Jones, George Adams and Kenny Barron among many others.

Dolly worked as a session singer in London before pursuing her solo career. In 1990, she released a 7-inch single with Andy Sheppard and she has toured with Simply Red. Her band performed at Womad and Ronnie Scott's in Birmingham. Now she is developing a new career as a jazz singer..

Manchester pianist Dan Whieldon leads a new band performing his rich, elegant music - contemporary European in style, rich in harmony, refined and elegant., their melodies eloquently voiced by the featuring the lyrical flugelhorn of Richard Iles.

Fish Tales brings together the orchestrations of Alan Barnes, the compositions of guitarist Pat McCarthy and the amusing, risqué and troubling poems of Josie Moon to portray the spirit and loss of the fishing community in Grimsby "Executed with love and skill "Fish Tales " represents a jazz concept that is all too rare" ****4 stars-Jazz Journal. South African saxman Dan Shout -Sunday afternoon 15 October @Inkwell 1.30pm £9/7 (NUS £5) Dan Shout saxes Dan Whieldon piano Gavin Barras bass Dave Walsh drums. Dan Shout is a respected sax player and jazz educator based in Cape Town, South Africa. He has performed in over 30 countries with the likes Johnny Clegg, Winston Mankunku, Maria Schneider and Frode Nymo.
Barry Ellis @Rush Hour Jazz Wednesday 20 October 6-7pm Payf . Barry Ellis is one of the veterans of the Leeds Jazz scene - playing tenor sax in bands with trumpeter Richard Auty from the 1960's onwards. He has a very smooth sax style reminiscent of Zoot Sims and Stan Getz
Dominic J.Marshall trio Sunday afternoon 22 October @Seven Arts 1.30pm start £10/8 (NUS £5). Dominic Marshall piano Sam Vicary double bass Sam Gardner – drums The Dominic J Marshall Trio consists of three friends who originally met in Leeds but have all now developed international careers. Dominic’s is based in Amsterdam and his music travels through jazz, classical, hip-hop, soul, folk and everything in between. “He brings together “A great heritage of the past, but also something very fresh and new.” Jamie Cullum
Stan Tracey Legacy Octet Thursday eve 26 October @Seven Arts Doors 7.30pm £20/18 (NUS £5). Mark Armstrong: trumpet; Mark Nightingale trombone; Sam Mayne: alto sax; Simon Allen: tenor sax; Nadim Teimoori: tenor/soprano sax; Steve Melling: piano; Andrew Cleyndert: bass; Clark Tracey: drums Stan Tracey was an outstanding figure in the jazz world and was always a great favourite in Leeds. His distinguished career spanned six decades of flourishing creativity and he He was a highly influential and stimulating musical voice, not only to his peers, but to each successive generation of musicians with whom he worked. This evening celebrates his music and features most of Stan’s last Octet, led by his son Clark and with Steve Melling at the piano. Support from Chris Bland Quartet 8-8.30pm

Andrew Gorman (violin) Daniel Gouly (Clarinet, Vocals) Josh Middleton (accordion) Tim Karp (Guitar) Jamie Benzies (Double Bass) Timmy Doyle (Drums) Dunja Botic (Vocals). Something different! Don Kipper are a multi award-winning 7-piece ensemble playing a wide range of traditional musical from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean - from Turkish and Greek folk music to Romani music and Klezmer.
