Puerto Rico moves to cancel deal with small town Whitefish Energy - Entrepreneur Generations

After widespread controversy, Puerto Rico may cancel a $300 million contract with a small Montana company to repair some of the island's electrical grid. Critics say that Whitefish Energy may have scored the no-bid contract because of the influence of Sec. of the Interior Ryan Zinke, who is from Whitefish, The Washington Post reports.

Other criticisms: In the contract, Whitefish was not required to provide proof that it would complete the work it promised. And the two-year-old company has only two employees, though Whitefish CEO Andrew Techmanski said the company's structure allowed it to hire subcontractors quickly.

Zinke insists he had nothing to do with Whitefish getting the contract. "Only in elitist Washington, D.C., would being from a small town be considered a crime," he said in a statement on Oct. 27.
