The deadline for Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act plan signups is midnight tonight in most states, and the numbers so far are surprisingly robust despite the Trump administration's concerted efforts to make it less accessible.
"As of last week, nearly 4.7 million people had signed up for a 2018 health plan through HealthCare.gov, the online federal insurance marketplace that serves consumers in 39 states.
Several million more are estimated to have signed up through marketplaces in 11 other states and the District of Columbia," Noam Levey reports for the Los Angeles Times. "The pace of enrollment has actually been quicker this year than last, according to federal data. And enrollment by new customers is up nearly 17 percent." And after signups are over, the federal government will automatically re-enroll between 1 million to 2 million people who have current ACA coverage but didn't sign up again.
Despite the record pace of signups early in this year's enrollment period, the overall totals of signups are not expected to match last year's total of 9.2 million enrollees. Part of that is because the Trump administration slashed the enrollment period from three months to six weeks and cut almost all funding for advertising and outreach.
