He also promised farmers a bill with crop insurance, touted (and took credit for) the booming stock market and economy, criticized the news media, and said that Democrats want to raise their taxes by 50 percent or more and double regulations.
Trump steered clear of a few controversial topics though. As we reported yesterday, farmers were likely looking for assurance that he would not withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement or adopt immigration policies that make it harder to hire farm workers. He sidestepped talking about NAFTA, saying in his speech that he was still renegotiating it, though he has threatened to pull out of it elsewhere. And he promised to cut down on immigration and "build the wall," though without specifics, Dawsey and Gearan report.
President Trump's speech yesterday was the first time a sitting president had spoken there in more than 25 years.
