Embattled Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt resigned yesterday after continuous controversy about his spending habits, ethics, and management decisions, Brady Dennis and Juliet Eilperin report for The Washington Post. Though Pruitt weathered the storms for months, the tipping point for his resignation may have been recent questions about whether he illegally deleted meetings from his calendar after the fact and fired an EPA aide because she questioned the practice, the New York Times reports.

Pruitt's spot will be filled by EPA Deputy Administrator and former coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler, a move that environmentalists immediately blasted, Dino Grandoni reports for The Washington Post. Wheeler was also the longtime attorney to coal magnate Robert Murray, a Trump donor who has been criticized for providing the Trump administration with a pro-coal wish list. Before his lobbying days, Wheeler was a longtime aide to Sen. James Inhofe who worked on environmental policy
