The former national president of the Society of Professional Journalists, Cross has won numerous awards for his journalism, is a member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame and the secretary of watchdog group the Kentucky Judicial Campaign Conduct Committee. He is frequently quoted in national news stories about political issues, rural issues, and journalism, David Thompson reports for Kentucky Press Association.
Cross is also "the author of several book chapters, most recently 'Trump and non-metropolitan America: An urbanite saw a rural base where pollsters and journalists didn’t,' in The Trump Presidency, Journalism and Democracy, a book published by Routledge in February," Thompson reports. "He is a contributing political columnist for the Louisville Courier Journal, where he was political writer for almost 16 years before coming to UK to take the Institute out of its pilot phase and into full operation."
Interim Director of UK's School of Journalism Mike Farrell told Thompson that the Rural Institute has been "a boon to journalism throughout Kentucky and rural communities everywhere, including Africa and Asia," Thompson reports.
Cross is a native of Albany, Kentucky, and graduated from Western Kentucky University. He lives with his wife Patti in Frankfort.
