New law in N.J. says polling places no longer have to be placed in dailies - Entrepreneur Generations

A new law in New Jersey will hit daily newspapers in the pocketbook.

The new law "ends the longtime practice of publishing a complete list of addresses for every polling location in the newspaper. That’s several pages of legal advertising for every county at least twice a year that cuts thousands of dollars in revenues from the newspapers," David Wildstein reports for New Jersey Globe. "Instead, the legal notice simply needs to direct voters to the Board of Elections website and print the phone number in the ad."

State Sen. Shirley Turner, D-Lawrence, says she co-sponsored the bill because it will save county taxpayers' money, and that the lists of polling locations don't tell voters where to go anyway. Patrick Diegnan, D-South Plainfield, was the other sponsor, Wildstein reports.

The new bill "brings New Jersey into the computer age," Diegnan said. "A voter can now simply go to the county webpage and locate their polling location . . . It brings about efficiency while saving tax dollars."

Last time such a bill was proposed, in 2016, newspapers objected strongly and the bill was ultimately withdrawn, Wildstein reports.
