A rural Iowa paper is in financial trouble after a failed libel lawsuit drained their coffers. Reporter Jared Strong of the Carroll Times Herald in Carroll, Iowa, spent more than two months investigating a tip that local police officer Jacob Smith was having an inappropriate relationship with teenage girls. Just before the Times Herald published, Smith resigned—and immediately filed a libel lawsuit, Meagan Flynn reports for The Washington Post.
"Now, even though the newspaper handily won the case, the legal expenses have left the family-owned local newspaper in financial peril, leading Burns to create a GoFundMe fundraiser seeking $140,000 to cover the expenses and to try to keep the paper in the family," Flynn reports.
