Our Jazz Leeds international season starts this month bringing some of the finest musicians in the world to Leeds. In February we have one of the most exciting young vocalists on the European jazz scene, Emilia Mårtensson from Sweden, a superb quartet fronted by two of the most original improvisers on either side of the Atlantic US pianist Ethan Iverson and Britain’s Martin Speake on sax, plus some more local favourites - saxman Ed Kainiek, guitarist Jeff Hewer and local Leeds heroes the Soul Surgeons.

Emilia Mårtensson Group

Emilia Martensson: vocals; Luca Boscagin: guitar; Fulvio Sigurta: trumpet/electronics; Sam Lasserson: bass; Adriano Adewale: percussion Over the last decade, Swedish jazz singer Emilia MÃ¥rtensson has built a well-deserved reputation as one of the most exciting young vocalists on the European jazz scene and she was awarded ‘Vocalist of the Year-2016′ at the UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Her gently expressive voice and highly personal compositions are firmly rooted in the folklore and the countryside of her native southern Sweden. Support (8-8.30pm): Tom Kettleton’s “Suppertime. 

Soul Surgeons
Sunday afternoon 9 February 1.30-4pm Nine-piece band who really rocked the Chapel Allerton Festival Jazz Sunday this year in Regent Street. Blues, jazz soul, music from Etta James to Tom Jones, the Blues brothers to Dusty Springfield, Motown and much more in between. Bringing the soul back into jazz! 

Martin Speake International Quartet, with Ethan Iverson

A superb quartet fronted by two of the most original improvisers on either side of the Atlantic. US pianist Ethan Iverson (one of New York’s finest and most innovative pianists, best known for his work as a member of Bad Plus) and Britain’s Martin Speake on sax – reviving a partnership with that goes back over a decade.Support from Will Powell Trio

Ed Kainyek Quartet 
Sunday afternoon Feb 23 @Seven Arts 1.30-4pm Ed Kainyek sax, Richard Harrold pno, Will Graham drums and John Sandham bass The bluesy funky sax of Ed Kainyek, an alumnus of the Leeds Jazz Rock Orchestra now based in Manchester. Latin, funk jazz and blues. Ed's a Tubby Hayes fan and will devote a fair share of the performance to contemporary british jazz musicians
