Music in the open air is the theme for leedsJazz for the coming month.Come and join us at Seven Arts Courtyard on Sunday afternoons, or come and jam at the Jazz Cafe at Meanwood Valley Farm Barn, or have a special jazz and blues picnic as part of the Chapel Allerton Festival on tour at Gledhow Sport Club ground. We've also got a special evening gig for you!

Enjoy the sun, the at seat service and the street food at our summer selection of bands in the Seven Arts or the Meanwood Valley Farm Barn courtyards - pay what you feel collection.
Saturday 7 August –Jazz café and jam session at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm Barn 3-5pm payf (Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is on Sugar Well Road near the Meanwood Road Recycling Centre) -come and play, sing, or just watch the fun!

Sunday 15 August Flying High Band in Seven Arts Courtyard if dry, inside if wet – 1.30-3.30pm payf Andy Henderson trumpet, Jon Taylor Sax, Cathy Ibberson sax, Jim Wright banjo, Steve Crocker bass, Paul Smith drums. Traditional jazz and swing from the band formed at last year's Chapel Allerton Festival - and still going!
Sunday 22 August: Imaji feat John Meikle drums, Tom Richardson alto James Hobbis tuba. Seven Arts Courtyard if dry, inside if wet – 1.30-3.30pm payf. John Meikle is the drummer with the band Suppertime, who so impressed us with their support set for the Emilia Martensson concert last year. John has formed a great trio with Tom Richardson and James Hobbis who play alto sax and tuba respectively. He is really passionate about bringing Tubas back into jazz!
Sunday 29 August: Jenny Smith-Jon Chamberlain Quartet with Jenny on vocals, Jon Chamberlain keys. Seven Arts Courtyard if dry, inside if wet – 1.30-3.30pm payf. Expect swinging tunes beuatifully sung and played
Chapel Allerton Festival Jazz and Blues September 1-5th
Chapel Allerton Festival is on the move. Over Festival weekend (Sept 4-5) we will be holding a jazz and blues picnic at Gledhow Sports and Social club, like last year . This will be family friendly and there is ample space to spread out but still enjoy food, drink and music in the company of others. JazzLeeds are promoting two indoor events during the festival
Wed 1 Sept - Festival Rush Hour jazz @Seven Arts 6-7pm, pianist Ben Gilbert will join the JazzLeeds trio - and there will be another special guest too! payf Seven Arts Courtyard if dry, inside if wet – 6-7.15pm payf.

Lukáš Oravec is a wonderful young Slovakian trumpet player who plays and writes with lots of fire and creativity. His music has a distinctive sound as does his playing. Alex Garnett has been one of the leading saxophonists in the UK and Europe for over two decades, being instantly recognized by his dark, husky sound. Alex Garnett is a hugely versatile sax player who has enjoyed success as both a professional creative jazz artist, composer and arranger, and an in demand session, studio and commercial saxophonist. The two stars will be joined by the talents of Jamil Sheriff – Piano, Jack Garside – Double Bass, Marek Dorcik – Drums. “I think you will enjoy this wonderful music as well as hearing the band play live” Bob Mintzer

Jazz and Blues Picnic on Sunday 5th September....1-6pm @Gledhow Sports Club Field
The music line up will feature some ever popular festival favourites:
1.00pm Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra directed by Brendan Duffy – the legendary Leeds youth band- they’ve not played live for ages so lets cheer them on
2.15pm James O’Hara Blues band – superb Chicago blues from James O Hara guitar and vocals John Burr harmonica Paul Corry guitar and Chris Sykes drums
3.30pm The Big Easy a lively five piece swing band from Leeds, consisting of vocals, trumpet, guitar, double bass and drums. Music from the best swing swing from throughout the 20th century.
4.45 Ubunye .A vibrant seven piece Afro Jazz/dance band based in the UK, featuring threevocalists from Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa and a four piece rhythm section. The music is an inspirational blend of jazz, Isigqi-traditional Zulu music-and Afro-pop. High energyAfrican beats and traditional sounds morph into more contemporary musical styles, telling stories of human struggles with themes of universal resonance.
