Next week is News Literacy Week, with five events online - Entrepreneur Generations


Monday, Jan. 22, through Friday, Jan. 26, is News Literacy Week, presented by the News Literacy Project and The E.W. Scripps Co. to "turn a spotlight on local news and its role in a democracy."

The observance includes five events for educators and the public, online and in-person in Washington, D.C., that will explore "the crisis in local news coverage and efforts to keep it alive," the sponsors say. "We’ll showcase industry professionals, journalism students, educators and others tackling this crisis with workable solutions."

The events will be livestreamed; individual event registration is required.

Monday, Jan. 22: Extra, extra: How to solve the local news crisis: An in-person panel discussion at the National Press Club moderated by former NBC correspondent Tracie Potts with Steven Waldman of Rebuild Local News, Sarabeth Berman of the American Journalism Project, Kimi Yoshino of the Baltimore Banner and Margaret Sullivan, media critic for The Guardian and author of Ghosting the News: Local Journalism and the Crisis of American Democracy. REGISTER LEARN MORE

Tuesday, Jan. 23: Behind the scenes with The Washington Post's TikTok team: A live-streamed conversation for educators and students with Dave Jorgenson and Carmella Boykin, who will talk about the ins and outs of producing newsy, short-form videos and answer questions from students who have been using NLP’s resources to learn news-literacy skills. REGISTER   LEARN MORE

Wednesday, Jan. 24: How student journalists are helping to fill the gap in local news: A student-led, virtual panel discussion on the ways young people are making a difference in the coverage of their communities and ensuring their audiences have access to relevant and high-quality journalism. Panelists will be Sara Maloney, managing editor of The Eudora Times in Kansas, Ashlyn Myers, reporter for TheStateHouseFile.com and Harsidak Singh of The Arlington Amp. They will discuss how they got into journalism, why it’s important work and how it benefits audiences in their states. REGISTER   LEARN MORE
