My goal was never athletics, but it was to be the best - Entrepreneur Generations

Every athlete who wins has a coach, a team, and are surrounded by winners that's for sure. A few years ago I took a journey to running marathons, then to ultras. No coach, no training, no help, just a lot of mates laughing at the idea of me being an athlete back then but a few said I could and they came with me.  I headed to the mountains, lochs, valleys and rivers after finishing the marathon in 4:53 to feed and strengthen my mind, it was an idea of sharing the journey or closing of like all other athletes do and focusing on the one result to win, my passion was always self reliance but this time I could share it on an iPhone. Anyone will tell you that's been successful in any field of life that if you are not committed then you will be distracted by everything else.  I still decided to face all the distractions on the way and still go for it all at once, answer the questions along the way and video log the journey forward and accept invitations when they came for other things, it was time to go all in. One day looking back on the videos will make sense, this was going to work out. If people want to know how it was done, then instead of showing a book? I can say check out the video journey if you wish and it's nice to put out free content also for others.

My goal was to run a marathon in under 3 hours and finish in the top 3 of a 100 mile race. It's just something about that distance that makes me smile.  I'm also 55kg lighter than I first started on the journey. No matter how much training I put in there's no chance I'll be the worlds best marathoner, or 10k expert because my physiology doesn't approve or the 10 years with an athletic background.  I'm a 6 foot 1 white male from Scotland I think they Kenyans will have me every time over those distances. But going to the longer than the marathon distance to 100 miles makes it less about physiology and physical strength and more to do with mental toughness, hard work and nutrition so it levels out the playing field, just like a library levels out the political playing field. There's no escaping the miles in training or the food on the plate, and the mental toughness is about finding fuel in an empty tank and that's my strongest point, got lots of previous for that!

I hit my 5 year goal well under the intended target & had a few podium finishes at lower distances also but the ones I love are the 26.2 mile and the 100 miler, they just stand out to me. I wanted to show that if I could do it then we all can do it, left the videos on YouTube, added a few variety to the end also as when giving public talks people always ask for a written book or business card so I just hand out my YouTube channel and email and then move forward in this direction in life now. I love running, I always will but I'm not after the significance in closing the while world off to stand on the podium in triumph ~ its more about helping bring value to people's life's on a deeper level.

I've loved every minute of the ultra journey, opening up, even racing at times and will run the London marathon next year to celebrate this years 2:55.  By continually aiming for under 3 hours gets an automatic entry to other marathons around the globe and I see it as a lifestyle now, not a competition. The 100 miler, there is something special and personal about that distance to me and will run that again for those reasons. I just love running, being outside, writing, reading, connecting, speaking, meditating, enjoying life and drinking tea it's never been about the competition. It's always been about freedom, I love my friends as they are competitive they keep pulling me along but at this moment speed work, clocks and times is not my style of running. I just enjoy our long training run and healthy foods afterwards, there's no doubt my friends are winners. They have helped me achieve the results I have now, getting put through a vo2 Max soon to check the scientific part of my athletic performance & how much faster I could get with more dedication and hard work. But deep down I know I've made my peace with the sport, it's given me more than I could ever imagine, brought so many people into my life and opened up so many new doors. Maybe I will run the 100 miler and marathon faster again next year, but racing others has never been my thing. I love being vegan and plant based which is close to me also. It's always been about me being the best dad that I can be, and designing a healthy lifestyle to share from that now and in the future also. There's so many outstanding athletes, runners and results from so many others, for me it's been more about lifestyle change.  To be put in situations to be around other with that discipline and mindset has been a blessing, I will always be grateful for that and also enjoy being a beginner again at swimming, weights and all other parts of indoor and city life.

I will be and also will continue to be the best example of positive psychology in Scotland and the UK. That's all really & it's amazing what you can do with an apple a day, water, meditation, writing, speaking and reading books.

Whatever the mind can can conceive and believe it can achieve, regardless of how many times you may have failed in the past.
