Hull Jazz Festival returns 14 - 17 November - Entrepreneur Generations

Hull Jazz Festival returns from Wed- Sat 14 - 17 November with four days of live music that showcase the diversity of the UK jazz scene.

Trombonist Paul Taylor and poet John Robinson bring together a company of eight local artists to pay tribute in words and music to the Hull Pals Battalions of WW1, marking the centenary of the end of the war. They open the festival at Hull Truck Theatre on Wednesday 14 November with Other Ranks.

Rising star trumpeter Laura Jurd brings her band Dinosaur to Hull Truck Theatre for the first time on Thursday 15 November. Synth-pop meets jazz band on their critically-lauded 2018 album Wonder Trail, packed with folk-infused grooves and glistening melodies.

Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint brings his Allstar 5tet to Hull Truck Theatre on Friday 16 November, performing tracks from their acclaimed new project Brother Raymond. Gathering 4-star reviews on its release earlier this year, it’s a daring suite of original pieces that build on the legacy of the late, great Art Blakey whilst showcasing the talent and power of this new generation of musicians.

On Saturday 17 November at Hull Truck Theatre, virtuoso guitarist and composer Gonzalo Bergara explores what might have happened if Django Reinhardt had met Tango maestro Astor Piazzolla. With a quartet featuring some of the UK’s most accomplished Gypsy Jazz performers, he effortlessly blends the sounds of Parisian swing and his native Argentina.

Singer and songwriter Juliet Kelly is hailed as one of the UK's finest jazz voices. She’ll be joined by her friends from Hull Junior Choir at the Albemarle Music Centre on Saturday 17 November. Juliet Kelly’s Family Jazz Show is a fun-filled celebration of great jazz singers past and present, with plenty of chances for the audience (young and old!) to join in.

Trio HLK team up with the world’s leading solo percussionist, Dame Evelyn Glennie MBE, in an incredible new collaboration. Glennie’s approach to sound creation is the perfect match for Trio HLK’s complex rhythms and virtuosic improvisation. Combined, they’re an explosive tour de force and you can see them at Hull Truck Theatre on Saturday 17 November

The festival closes with The Trojan Story at Hull City Hall on Saturday 17 November. Jazz Jamaica All Stars, with a line-up featuring some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians, celebrate 50 years of the legendary reggae label Trojan Records.
